Notice that most of the colony has polyps extended giving it a "fuzzy" look. You can clearly see the branches where the polyps are retracted where the coral looks smooth.

(42290) Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris)
Octopus mostly hide in holes or under rocks during the day as they are nocturnal feeders. However they are quite inquisitive so will put their heads up to see what is happening as a group of divers goes by (see inset photo)! They pull rocks and bits of shell in on top of themselves to cover the entrance to their holes.

These are a type of animal called a hydroid and have the same stinging structures as the rest of cnidarians, despite their innocuous appearance. They are generally quite small; the thicket in this photo is no more than 6 inches tall.

They are on a catkin (flower cluster) of the male coco de mer.
